The Shadows: A Novel
By Alex North
This book is about:
Paul returns to his hometown after 25 years, only stepping foot in town because his mother is in hospice after an accident.
He escaped from there as soon as possible after a horrendous murder took place, that friends from his childhood committed.
Copycat killings have been occurring but he’s paid no attention to the news, only finding out because his mother has been keeping record.
A detective, Amanda, who is investigating the most recent of the copycat murders is thrown into the mystery of what actually took place 25 years ago.
Thrown into confronting the past, what he took part in, and those he surrounded himself with. Paul is face to face with Red Hands and what actually happened to Charlie.
What I liked:
How loving and protective Paul’s mother was as well as some of the other parents through out the novel.
That it jumped between Then and Now to give a lot of information and background to what was happening. That the smallest detail ends up coming into play later on.
The suspense and twists about who is the killer, who exactly is killed, and what really happened all those years ago.
What wasn’t my cup of tea:
Wish the lead up to the attic wasn’t so anticlimactic. Was it spooky, yes, but I doubt the mother would have actually done any of that unless she wasn’t of sound mind. I understand she had dementia, but it didn’t seem very plausible.
Overall:
It was good and I would absolutely recommend it to those who enjoy psychological thrillers.
It had an aspect to it that felt like it was something that could actually happen in real life, like those children who believe in slenderman and the blair witch.
