The Impossible Girl
by Lydia Kang
1850’s a woman named Cora is born with two hearts and is of mixed lineage, which is considered taboo at that time.
Disowned by her family, she becomes a resurrectionist to provide for her Maid (Who is like a mother to her) and her Uncle Alexander. Who was a beau of her late Aunt Charlotte.
Being a resurrectionist, someone who robs graves and sells them to universities or oddities museums, she is at an advantage to hear any rumors of her predicament.
In order to do this and survive, she pretends to be her own twin, Jacob, in order to protect herself even further and to do the dirty work.
This is full of finding the truth, love, and betrayal.
What I liked:
Setting is in 1850’s New York City and there is a wonderful slow burn romance with Theodore Flint.
There are two wonderful twists in the story. One that seems obvious and the other that completely takes you by surprise.
The reveals are both wonderful for these twists, how Cora reacts to it, but also the love she has for complete strangers.
Absolutely adore the last little bit of the book.
What Wasn’t My Cup of Tea:
Spoiler: The obsession reveal of Uncle Alexander towards Cora was a little too much, mainly because it happened at such a young age.
How brutally the woman Aubry was murdered and some of the others in the book aswell.
That it wasn’t two hearts actually, but only a bundle of veins and such.
Leah betraying her and turning on her, just was a shit thing to do, but makes the story flow well.
How they refer to Cora’s lineage even though that’s how it was in the time period, but shines light on how awful it was for people during that time.
Overall Thoughts:
Really enjoyed it, and recommended it to my mom over facetime the night that I finished it!
The slowburn of the romance was very realistic and added just the right amount of character to the story.
Loved the way Kang wrote everything, down to the pub/brothel that Jacob visited, the slang of the “gang” like members of the other resurrectionist profession, and even Cora’s own gang of misfits. It was perfect and very accurate.
The science aspect and Anatomy and Physiology in there was also very accurate, and honestly loved being able to just enjoy women being badass in STEM. Especially Dr. Blackwell and Cora’s expansive medical knowledge.
