There definitely are trigger warnings for depression, PTSD, sexual assault, assault, and possibly eating disorders. So please be careful and gentle with yourself while reading this book.
This behemoth of a book, nearly 800 pages, was one of the quickest reads of my life. I simply could not put it down! This is the fourth book in the series and it picks up right where A Court of Frost and Starlight leaves off, but this is focused solely on Nesta and Cassian’s relationship. After letting Nesta deal with the trauma of the war alone and in her own way, which consists of drinking till oblivion and bringing strangers into her bed. Freye decides to take matters into her own hands after Nesta charges a night on the town to the Night Court and it is a small fortune. When Nesta is faced with the choices to either train with Cassian, live in the house of the winds, and work in the library OR be dropped off on the other side of the wall with the humans. She reluctantly chooses Cassian and everything that comes with it. Through this small choice, she finds things she did not realize were missing. She forms new friendships in the most unlikely of places, a new inner strength, taps into the power she stole from the Cauldron, and finally finds a purpose. As well as a way to love herself again and her family.
This might be one of my favorite books in the series thus far. I didn’t realize how heavily I related to Nesta in some aspects until reading this book. She’s a stone cold bitch, coping in the only way she knows how, when her sister intervenes and forces her into a different way of life. I loved it. The character development, the realism of having gone through something and the aftermath, but also the realistic way that trauma will present itself. But most of all, finding the inner strength to pull yourself out of the dark place and find reasons to live and keep going. To throw yourself so heavily into something positive that it’s conducive to healing and finding yourself. That aside, the smut in this book was perfect. In true Maas style it is full bodied and details a plenty. I could have gone without the various names for a dick when it could have been called just a dick, at least once. Other than that I can’t wait for the next installment, whether it’s a novella or another brick...I’m absolutely here for it.
