Once Upon a Broken Heart (Once Upon a Broken Heart #1) by Stephanie Garber

Once Upon a Broken Heart (Once Upon a Broken Heart #1)

Stephanie Garber

Started this book in the airport, knowing it’s one of the booktok finds, my best friend gave it to me to read. It was surprisingly really good, I’ve never read anything else by Garber, but I’ll definitely be checking it out. Took about 4 hours to read and I finished it on the plane before landing. Very excited for the sequel.

This Book is About:

  • Eva Fox’s step sister is marrying her (first) love. So Eva sees no other way to make it stop besides praying to the Fate of Broken Hearts, Jacks. Who’s kisses are said to kill anyone who dares try, except his one true love.

  • Her wish/ prayer is answered, for a price, and her entire family and the wedding party gets turned to stone. The only way to end it is to in fact turn herself into stone after realizing the damage she has done.

  • Thinking that her love, Luc, would save her. It took weeks before she is turned make…and by a stranger. Another fate actually, Poison.

  • As for the payment of stopping the wedding, she owes Jacks three kisses. Not to kiss him, that is up to him…he gets to decide who and when.

  • Eva and her stepsister get sent into a type of competition to who can marry a prince, where things all go downhill.

  • Other fates get involved, there are vampires, magical arches that can only be opened by a girl prophesied years ago.

What I Liked:

  • The idea of fates and how they actually blend into society. Very much like characters of a different type of tarot cards coming to life.

  • Jacks and Eva’s friendship/relationship. How they develop a bond.

  • The arches and the history of the Valors.

  • Practical magic being used and that its just a normal thing, and the baby dragons!

What Wasn’t My Cup of Tea:

  • That Marisol, the step sister, was actually nefarious in some aspects of the book but also not?

  • Luc’s entire being…cant stand that man.

  • Not enough info on the secret society that is mentioned at the very end of the book. Feel like it was really rushed and I needed more context.

  • The ending twist!

Overall Thoughts:

Love  that it was an easy read but it didn’t lack anything of a harder read. The world was really fleshed out and described wonderfully. Will say at times it was described in a bit of a childish way. Loved Jacks entire personality and way of being. The twist of what’s going on within himself is just wonderful but definitely cruel that the book ended before getting to explore it. Which just makes the entire ending a bit more off as well, I don’t know, it was very rushed. It was lacking some information that would have helped. Overall, I have recommended it already to a few others, and I’m looking forward to the second in the series.

Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin

This book is perfect for lovers of any of Sarah J Maas’ work, especially the Throne of Glass Series. Following the story of Lou, a Dame Blache, who is running from her previous life and trying to make a way in a world where witches burn. She senses trouble when witches make a move to attack the King in a public setting and she needs to hide. But not before bumping into the Archbishops military force against all types of magical creatures because they are considered unnatural. Where we meet Reid, the Archbishops golden boy and captain of the Chasseurs, who thinks nothing of her running from the scene in the square. Until their paths meet again at a political figures’ house during a robbery and he’s taken aback by her ability to narrowly escape. When they serendipitously bump into each other for a third time, a public scene is made, and the Archbishop forces them (a witch and a witch hunter) into marriage. Having to hide who she is from her husband, the entire world, all while trying

Lullaby by J.L Bryan (Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper #7)

"You want to see if you can train the evil singing nursey ghost to...do what? Babysit evil children?"     Ellie Jordan's life just got a whole lot more complicated; Calvin sells the company, and the new owners are in town calling all the shots...not to mention Michael is in a coma due to the injuries sustained on one of her last investigations. The new client they are to meet is a pregnant woman who has a ghost that appears in the nursey singing an eerie lullaby. As always, the team discovers there are more ghosts in the house and that one hunts children, and they need to stop them before they try to kill again. All while figuring out where the now dormant Anton Clay is hiding.      Once again Bryan just absolutely knocks it out of the park with this new addition. I just want to open this up with saying how much I absolutely hate the new owners PSI, and Kara the Russian woman overseeing everything. she is extremely in touch with the paranormal and has a few tricks up he
