Picked up this book because it’s been on my TBR pile for the longest time and needed a new book for my time at the airport. Ended up being one of those books that I just absolutely devoured in two days. Lately I’ve been obsessed with magics and witches, this book hit all of the marks. Plus being a Latina, I’ve loved having even the smallest amount of representation shown..which is obvious with the names of locations and certain titles of characters/ types of magic wielder. Loved the Brooklyn Brujas as well and just had to see what else Zoraida Córdova had written. This book picks up right in the middle of the story, where the prologue had me wondering if I picked up the sequel by accident, but it’s right in the action which is the absolute best. It follows the usual aspect of magic books; a kingdom that doesn’t want any magic users, rebels that are trying to show they’re not a threat unless reckoned, a giant threat to all magic users, and the enemies to lovers trope. With that being said, you would think that everything would fit into a certain pattern. There are so many twists and turns that everything above is just the beginning.
The main character Ren is a unique and rare type of magic user, a Robari. Meaning she is able to steal memories just by touching someone. A terrible side effect is that all of her own and the others' memories are now locked away in the Gray, meaning she doesn’t remember her life in the kingdom. Now a part of the rebel forces after being forced as a child to do terrible acts in the name of the kingdom. With her unit of other Moria, a collection of other magic users, they go to destroy a weapon that threatens the entirety of the magic welding community. After losing her love, the one who makes her feel safe amongst the others, Ren goes on a solo mission to the one place she vowed to never go again, the kingdom. After being thrown back into the throws of the kingdom life and feeling like a traitor to her cause, she begins her mission to find the weapon and destroy it. Between stealing memories and following clues of her own memories escaping the gray, she makes friends and contacts in the castle. When she finds herself taking memories of the prince, the one who murdered her love Dez, Ren finds herself having conflicting feelings towards him. After coming face to face with the Prince at the ball, she is confused when he confesses that he knew her as children. From there the story delves deeper into the past and the distrust amongst Ren’s unit that at the end, she ends up leaving with the prince.
For those who enjoy the Throne of Glass series and the Dove and Serpent series, this is one you would certainly enjoy.
